Celebrate special occasions with a slice of nostalgia and pure joy. This Yellow Birthday Cake with Chocolate Frosting is moist, flavorful, and decadently rich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this to the creamed butter mixture, alternating with the milk until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Smooth the tops with a spatula.
  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. For the frosting, beat the softened butter and cocoa powder until smooth. Gradually add in the powdered sugar and heavy cream, mixing until fluffy and creamy.
  9. Once the cakes are cool, spread frosting between the two layers, then cover the top and sides with remaining frosting.
  10. Slice, serve, and enjoy!
