Southern Pecan Praline Cake

A comforting Southern dessert featuring a tender yellow cake topped with a rich, nutty praline sauce.

  • 1 box butter or yellow cake mix
  • 1 cup chopped pecans, divided
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 baking dish.
  2. Combine the cake mix, eggs, vegetable oil, whole milk, and 1 tsp vanilla extract in a large bowl. Mix until smooth.
  3. Stir in the chopped pecans.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  5. Make the praline topping while the cake bakes. Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over medium heat, then stir in the brown sugar and heavy cream.
  6. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  7. Remove the praline mixture from heat and stir in the chopped pecans, 1 tsp vanilla extract, and 1/4 tsp salt.
  8. Pour the warm praline topping over the freshly baked cake.
  9. Let the cake rest for 15 to 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

Tips: Toast the pecans for deeper flavor. Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 2 days.
