Homemade Cheddar Biscuits

Flaky, buttery homemade cheddar biscuits infused with garlic and loaded with sharp cheddar cheese, perfect for any meal.

  • 2 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon aluminum-free baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cubed and very cold
  • 1 cup + 2 tablespoons cold buttermilk, divided
  • 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted (for topping)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (for topping)
  • 1 teaspoon dried or fresh chopped parsley (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C).
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, garlic powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until resembling coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. Make a well in the center and pour in 1 cup of buttermilk and honey.
  6. Gently combine until just incorporated.
  7. Knead the dough gently for 30 seconds, shape into a rectangle and fold into thirds.
  8. Repeat the folding process three times.
  9. Cut the dough into circles and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  10. Brush the tops with remaining buttermilk.
  11. Bake for 18-22 minutes until golden brown.
  12. Mix melted butter, garlic powder, and parsley in a bowl.
  13. Brush the biscuits with the garlic butter mixture and serve warm.

Notes

For extra flaky biscuits, keep butter very cold. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days or refrigerate for a week. Freezing uncooked dough is also an option.
