Cookies with Various Toppings

Warm, buttery cookies that are endlessly adaptable with a variety of toppings and mix-ins.

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1/2 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups + 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Optional coarse sugar for rolling
  • Add-ins as desired (e.g., chocolate chips, crushed Oreos, freeze-dried raspberries)

Instructions

  1. Beat the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar together until creamy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until incorporated.
  3. Gradually mix in the all-purpose flour and salt on low speed until just combined.
  4. Gently fold in any desired add-ins.
  5. Roll the dough into logs, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 240 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Slice chilled logs into cookies, optionally rolling edges in coarse sugar.
  8. Bake for 13-15 minutes until lightly brown.
  9. Allow to cool slightly before transferring to a wire rack.
  10. Optional: Dip or drizzle with melted chocolate and add toppings.

Notes

Chill the dough well for tidy cookie shapes and to enhance flavors. Store in an airtight container.
