Cinnamon Sugar Donuts

These baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts are a warm, comforting treat with a tender crumb, a crisp, cinnamon-sugar coating, and a soft, cake-like interior.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon for coating
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted for dipping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C) and grease donut pan(s) with nonstick spray.
  2. Whisk the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and nutmeg together until even.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk the egg, brown sugar, milk, and sour cream until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Spoon the batter into the donut cavities, filling each about halfway.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes or until lightly browned.
  7. Cool donuts in the pan for 2 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  8. Combine the granulated sugar and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
  9. Dip each warm donut in the melted butter, then dunk it in the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
  10. Serve shortly after coating while the donuts are still warm.

Notes

Use room temperature ingredients for best results. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Freeze uncoated donuts for up to 2 months.
