Chocolate Orange Butter Cookies with Ganache Filling

These chocolate orange butter cookies are a sunny twist on a classic, combining tender cookie rounds flavored with fresh orange zest and a rich chocolate ganache filling.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 and 1/2 tablespoons fresh orange zest
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 large egg yolk, at room temperature
  • 1 and 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for rolling
  • Optional: coarse sparkling sugar for topping
  • 2/3 cup heavy cream
  • 6 ounces semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Make the cookie dough: In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter with an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and the fresh orange zest, mixing until well combined and fragrant.
  2. Add the egg, egg yolk, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix on medium speed until fully incorporated.
  3. Gradually add the flour, mixing just until the dough comes together. Do not overmix.
  4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Chill briefly if sticky.
  5. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for at least 3 hours to firm for shaping.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut into desired shapes and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until edges are lightly golden.
  8. Allow cooling completely on a wire rack.
  9. Make the ganache: Heat heavy cream until simmering, pour over chopped chocolate, let sit for a minute, then stir until smooth.
  10. Cool ganache to piping consistency, then pipe onto half of the cookies and sandwich with the remaining cookies.

Notes

Use freshly grated orange zest for the brightest aroma and finely chop the chocolate for a silky ganache. Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
