Spooky Black Velvet Halloween Cake

A delightful and rich black velvet cake perfect for Halloween celebrations, combining a moist chocolate flavor and a striking appearance.

  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon black food coloring

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and lightly flouring them.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black food coloring until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and beat for about 2-3 minutes on medium speed until smooth.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes, then turn them out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Frost the cake with cream cheese frosting and decorate with Halloween-themed toppings.
