Crème Brûlée French Toast

Indulgent French toast inspired by the classic dessert crème brûlée, featuring a creamy custard and a caramelized sugar crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of brioche or challah bread
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt until well combined.
  3. Place the slices of bread in a baking dish in a single layer and pour the custard mixture over the bread, ensuring each slice is submerged.
  4. Allow the bread to soak for at least 15 minutes or refrigerate overnight for best results.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and slightly jiggly in the center.
  6. Sprinkle a thin layer of granulated sugar on top and use a kitchen torch to caramelize until golden, or broil for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Let cool slightly, slice, and serve warm with toppings like fresh berries or whipped cream.

Notes

Use stale bread for the best absorption of the custard mixture. Watch closely when caramelizing sugar to avoid burning.
