Caramelized Tennessee Onions

Deliciously sweet and rich caramelized onions, perfect as a topping for a variety of dishes.

Ingredients

  • 4 large Vidalia onions
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)

Instructions

  1. Slice the onions thinly and evenly.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat until foamy.
  3. Add the sliced onions and stir to coat in butter.
  4. Sprinkle salt and optional sugar over the onions and stir to combine.
  5. Reduce heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions turn deep golden brown (30-45 minutes).
  6. Taste for seasoning and adjust if necessary.
  7. Transfer to a serving dish and enjoy.

Notes

Caramelized onions can be stored in the fridge for up to a week or frozen for up to three months.
