Apple Brown Betty

A cozy dessert made with layers of sweet and tart apples, breadcrumb topping, and warm spices, perfect for family gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 45 medium apples (mix of sweet and tart like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Melt the butter and mix it into the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the breadcrumb mixture, followed by half of the sliced apples, and repeat the process, finishing with the breadcrumb layer.
  5. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  6. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving, preferably with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For a twist, add cranberries or use maple syrup instead of brown sugar.
